SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KRON) — Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested at least three people Wednesday morning at the Sonoma County Superior Courthouse.

This comes just five days after the Trump administration announced it was deploying agents from the border to “sanctuary” cities that are hindering stepped up immigration enforcement.

San Francisco, along with several other cities like Boston, Chicago and New York are among those cities.

The news of the arrests has since caused fear throughout the Bay Area.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed and San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the actions taken by ICE at the Sonoma courthouse.

They wanted to ensure that all residents, regardless of immigration status, feel safe in the community.

“Recently the federal administration has continued to ignite fear in our communities by threatening sanctuary cities like ours. With today’s report that ICE detained three individuals outside a courthouse at Sonoma County, we want to remind all of our residents that the City and County of San Francisco is a sanctuary city, and we will continue to do everything we can to support our immigrant communities.”

Scott continued and spoke for the San Francisco Police Department.

“The San Francisco Police Department stands by our commitment to fostering trust and cooperating with all people of our City. We encourage everyone to communicate with San Francisco police officers without fear of inquiry regarding their immigration status. SFPD is responsible for the safety and well-being of all San Franciscans. We do not enforce immigration laws. The SFPD does not and will not provide assistance for any ICE or Border Patrol operations and we will not transport anyone suspected of solely violating immigration law.

Breed added final comments before the video ended.

“San Francisco is stronger because of our diversity. Our immigrant communities are an inseparable part of who we are as a City and we’ll continue to fight back against these attempts of fear and division. Reports of ICE activities should be made to the San Francisco Rapid Response Network at (415) 200 – 1548.”

Other local City officials went public after the Trump administration announced its plan.

San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin released a statement regarding ICE actions at the Sonoma courthouse.

“ICE actions at courthouses undermine our ability to hold defendants accountable by deterring undocumented victims and witnesses from cooperating with the justice system. These actions make all of us less safe. We have no reported incidents of ICE enforcement at either courthouse here in San Francisco, nonetheless we must remain vigilant. I am committed to protecting all members of our community and to preserve the very fabric of who we are as San Franciscans.”

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf responded on Twitter, saying Oakland will remain the most unapologetic sanctuary city in America.

Acting ICE Director Matthew Albence said the move is necessary because sanctuary cities are refusing to cooperate with ICE in the capture of immigrants. He says border agents will “supplement” ICE.
